If you want to be an author, please take notes:

If you are writing a fiction novel it is very important to know your subject. Why? It makes the story more realistic and intriguing to the reader. Knowing DESCRIPTIVE details of your particular content, such as the setting, will also help you develop the story and avoid writer's block. It doesn't matter if the setting/location is imaginary or real, the better you describe it the more it comes alive for the reader.

The more you know, the more your story will grow into the masterpiece you desire.

Setting: Where does the story take place?
What is the weather like there?
What is the culture?
Landmarks?
Tourist spots?
State flower?
Population?
Any famous residents?
Major parks?
Sport Teams?

You should collect as much information as possible so you can formulate a realistic depiction in your narrative.

Read the following excerpt to see how details paint a picture in the reader's mind and creates the tone perfectly.

Bloodstone: Part three By Nate Kenyon

"Late evening brought the cold again, and a wind that whipped up through the valley along the river and over the hills. Earl Flanagan felt it numb him to the bone as he jogged awkwardly back out to the barn at midnight, carrying a warm bucket of water and a cloth.

The water sloshed over the sides and onto his heavy pants, and by the time he felt it soak through and touch his skin it was already ice-cold. Jesus Mary, sweet mother of God. What kind of goddamn weather was this?

It was like the man upstairs had gone crazy, turning it on, turning it off. It wasn’t nearly time for summer, not in Maine, but did it have to be this cold at night? The way the weather cycled was enough to drive a man nuts."

I hope this information is helpful as you embark on the wondrous journey of your creativity in motion. If you find other excerpts that exemplify descriptive details feel free to post it!
